My mutt had a while also. Seemed loudest when it was coasting or when I
simply let off the gas. I think they whine all the time, but it is just
harder to hear with the engine running. One good way to quiet down the
"whine" is to put some kind of rubber insulator between the differential and
body. One guy here in Idaho took pieces of sidewall from a tire and cut a
hole in it and put it between the differential and the body. Suprisingly
enough, it cut out a lot of road noise and differential whine.
