      The steering column actually is the outer tube. This tube is attached
 to the steering box with a clamp at the base.
 
        If you are referring to the steering shaft, it is internal with the
 box. The worm is pressed on it and you must disassemble the box and
 withdraw the steering sector to press the shaft out of the bottom.
 
     TM 9-2320-218-34 "Steering Gear, Body, and Chassis Components" has the

Jim is correct. But it may be of interest to note that the steering column on
the M151A2 is somewhat different, and there is a flexible coupling at the
bottom of the steering shaft (steering box end) which enables the steering
box to be separated from the shaft. The flexible coupling is circular and
looks like the sort of material used for conveyor belts. It makes for a much
easier replacement of the steering box.
