Laura, thankyou thankyou for the clear head of logic. (I haven't read
the other responses but...) As a member of one of the oldest clubs in
the Northwest it is our quest to get out there and be among the people.
Besides the usual 4th of July parades and the Veteran's Day we
participate in other municipal functions like the Whidbey Naval Air Sta
open house. And ur right about letting them touch and experience. The
most memorial impression I've observed is when a child ooh's n aah's the
insides of the equipment like the cockpit of the ASW planes or gets to
sit in the captains or navigator's seat or climb down into the the
refueler's couch in the back end of a KC135. Seeing a tank rumble down
the road terrifies a little one but u let them climb up on it and look
in the turret and they'll remember that for the rest of their lives.
Heck I get goose bumps just climbing around the guts of a tank or a half
track or whatever. So start thinking about what ur club can do to
improve the image and that will take the wind out of the sails of any
detractor before they get a chance to get windy. (One of my fondest
memories is the time my uncle and I filled the barrel of a 105 at the
County Park on Lopez Island with garbage cause we were going to try n
shoot it at the ferry - the breach was welded up).
Volunteer to display at airshows, museums, shopping mauls etc. Take the
neighbor kids for a ride. (My first time in a jeep was 40+ years ago
when the neighbor took my bro and I for a ride thru the woods and up a
very steep hill climb) Later K Dewey, Secretary Puget Snd MVCC, MVCC of
Oregon and MVPA (wife is reading this and enthusiastically agrees with
Laura)
