This is a 'feature' of the M-series. The housing is aluminum, the plug is
soft steel, you cannot get a straight shot at it because of the intake
manifold... Can you spell galvanic reaction?
By the way, for you M151 owners: The alternator mounting bolts and nuts
should be left snug, not tight. If you tighten them and need to change the
belt(s) in the field, you will play hell trying to move the alternator.
Becuase of thei placement, you need extensions and universal joint sockets.
You normally would not have these with you. The nuts are the all metal
equalivnet of the elastic stop nuts so you can leave them just snug so you
can move it in the field. Mine has been that way for about 6 years now.
