So far I don't think anyone has mentioned original military licence plates.
I have a collection of them. These can include (in Canada):
* Provincial licence plates the military used to about 1970 (they often have
a special military ID letter code e.g. "N" prefix in BC or an "F" suffix in
Ontario)
* DND and CANADA licence plates for CFR number (last 5 digits of the CFR)
NOTE: DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH CURRENT CANADIAN FORCES CANADA PLATES ON
IT! Some collectors put them on for static display only however.
* General licence plates (red with chrome star(s) - These are current issue
and clamp to a simple bracket with a bracket and wingnut.
* Exotic plates such as RCAF plates.
* NOTE: 1960s "CANADIAN ARMY GERMANY" plates are for civilian cars owned by
Canadian service personnel over there - darn! They are NEAT!

Bottom line of discussion on modern licence plates is seems to be - comply
with your your LOCAL laws, consider hiding or temporarily removing civy
plates for display or photo sessions if legal to do so which may be the case
if it is parked in a field or in a building on display (you may want
alternate signage to remind people these are PRIVATELY owned MVs).

In Canada, one does not want to lose or have stolen one's special plates due
to the cost and delay in replacing them.

By the way, in British Columbia, VINTAGE plates stay with the vehicle when
it is sold, but COLLECTOR and REGULAR and PERSONALIZED ("VANITY") plates
do not! No there is no logic to it, just different departments within the
same branch of government.
