As one reader observed, my original comment specifed WWII (World War II)
vehicles and computer cutout peel and stick decals being inapprorpriate for
THOSE vehicles in a restoration. Having said that, yes, water activated
decals (called "transfers" in the UK) have been used since at least 1944 on
Canadian and British military vehicles. Peel and stick types were introduced
at some point.
Water transfers were issued for most if not all formation signs for the
British and Canadian Armies from 1944 onwards. The maker was Gale & Polden
(Aldershot?). I have an almost complete collection of Canadian WWII and
some post-war Canadian formation transfers, most of them obtained from Pat
Smith (now deceased, was a President of what is now the MVPA), as well as a
few background transfers for "unit signs". I have cross-referenced their
catalogue numbers with wartime orders. e.g.
CAT.No. BMT 2365 is First Canadian Army, small ( for jeeps etc.)
CAT.No. BMT 2366 is the large size of the First Canadian Army (for trucks,
lorries, tanks etc.)
Here are some numbers of some other postwar Canadian original decals
(transfers):
- "Prairie Command" Canada Decalcomania Co. Limited # 31267 (note: yellow
wheat sheaf was unnumbered and is a separate decal from the Prairie Command
shield) (water type)
- "Western Command" Canada Decalcomania Co. Limited # 16812 (water type)
- "Mobile Command", small, Craft Originators & manufacturers Ltd., Hamilton,
NATO NSN 7690-21-846-8166 (the 21 country code stands for made in Canada)
Peel & stick.
- "Mobile Command", large, Craft Originators & manufacturers Ltd., Hamilton,
NATO NSN 7690-21-846-8167 (also made by Canada Decalcomania Co. Ltd. 549
Bathhurst Ave., Ottawa, Ont. Phone 236-3964 ) Peel & stick.
- "Canadian Forces" crest, Dri-Mark, # 63441 NATO part # 7690-21-848-3024
Peel & stick. (came in several sizes)
- The following are the numbers for the Canadian Forces Registration number
(last 5 of the 7 digits) as stuck to DND and later CANADA licence plates
from c. 1970 onwards and they are still in use. Peel & stick.
0 - NSN 7690-21-852-7232
1 - NSN 7690-21-852-7233
2 - NSN 7690-21-852-7234
3 - NSN 7690-21-852-7235
4 - NSN 7690-21-852-7236
5 - NSN 7690-21-852-7237
6 - NSN 7690-21-852-7238
7 - NSN 7690-21-852-7239
8 - NSN 7690-21-852-7240
9 - NSN 7690-21-852-7241
Question: Does the British term "transfer" apply to peel and stick as well
as water activated decals?).
Question: Is Canada Decalcomania Co. Limited, 507-511 King St. East,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada and later at 549 Bathhurst Ave., Ottawa, Ont.
Phone 236-3964 still in business? If so, is there any chance of getting
them to make decals for restorers from original designs?
