These quadrants were also used by the M-1917 and 1917A1 .30 cal. water
cooled machine guns. They were used for indirect or overhead fire. When
used for overhead fire, they are placed on the top of the receiver and the
gun is elevated to the correct angle. The troops then start the attack and
the gun fires over their heads to keep the enemy's heads down. Firing is
ceased as the troops reach the enemy's positions.
