Make me an offer... (thinking maybe $40-50 dollars???)
Item: Commemorative dinner size plate, WWII, Douglas MacArthur.
Front reads: "The Island Fortress of Corregidor, Entrance to Manila Bay."
Depicts a drawn picture of island, Douglas MacArthur, 5 stars in background,
West Point and several soldiers with WWI type helmets with fixed bayonets.
Dark blue on a white background. Boarder has "V" also in morse code ...-
with stars and stripes. Excellent picture of MacArthur in uniform. (Plate
is perfect condition)
The reverse side reads as follows:
" Gen. Douglas MacArthur, The 62 year old commander, son of Gen. Arthur
MacArthur of Spanish-American War fame, began his military career with his
graduation from West Point in 1903. He was the youngest division commander
in the A.E.F. in 1917, youngest Chief of Staff, USA (1930-1935). Sent to the
Philippines in 1936, he is now in command of the United States Far East
Forces. For his heroic defense of the Philippines against overwhelming odd,
he will have everlasting fame as one of the great leaders of military
history."
by Vernon Kilns U.S.A.
The way it reads it seems like the Philipines has not yet fallen, so this
must be at least created before December, 1941. Story places MacArthur at
age 62, another tip this was created in 1941 as MacArthur was born in
January, 1880.
Anyone interested in this rather rare bit of military history?
