I would suspect a weak or damaged diaphragm in the fuel pump which I
have been told can suck oil from the crankcase into the fuel lines and
possibly the vacuum lines as well. My '51 has a plug in the "S" shaped
carb inlet tube - I expect the petcock was a "field expedient" addition
by some motor transport mechanic, possibly to allow easy drainage of
excess oil in the tube. I concur that overfilling the oil bath air
cleaner could be the source of oil in the inlet tube. I have a problem
with fouling spark plugs which I suspect is caused by the weak fuel pump
sucking oil and intend to either rebuild it or circumvent it with an
electric in the future.
