I have to think the most impressive modification of WW2 military equipment for
such practices was in the AAF: an ex P-47 pilot who lived a few houses away from
me was telling of how he took out the seat of his aircraft, replaced it with a
Coca-Cola bottle case, flew back to England from his forward base in France,
picked up his girlfriend, flew back to France, had a great weekend, and then flew
her back to England. (they were later married)
He said it was the first known instance of a "two-seater" P-47!
