Hi Jack,
Sandblasting is pretty expensive to have done. Mostly, I think, because
it's uncomfortable and dirty.
Most places seem to charge $50/ hr. and up. The problem is everything you
sandblast is different. It seems paint goes on and sticks differently. Even
on large things painted all at once, you'll find areas that clean up fast,
and some you can hardly get the stuff off. Some of this has to do with how
soon it was painted after cleaning, and some seems to be electrical. I've
found areas when sandblasting that look like a current passed through,
maybe static, and the paint will hardly come off.
On something as big as you're doing, if you have time, I'd recommend
renting a compressor and sandblaster and doing it yourself.
It's also nice to be able to paint or prime within 1/2 hour of exposing
bare metal. It takes about that long for the first elemental rust to start
on iron or steel, and if you can get primer on before that, the paint
sticks much better. Aluminum happens in only a few minutes, so that may be
impractical on large stuff.
Hard brittle paints seem to come off easier than flexible ones, too.
Another thing, as I understand it, CARC paint is bad stuff even when dry
in the form of dust. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to paint,
especially that, but it seems a person doesn't want to deal with this dust
at all. it might be advisable if you're doing the sandblasting yourself to
wet the area after your done to get the dust and paint to settle and not
blow around your yard. Don't, however, get the bare metal wet, this will
accelerate the oxidation process.
I'd use a very good filter or pressurized helmet if sandblasting CARC
paint.
Hope this helps,
Henry
