I'm planning on installing an AN/VRC-47 radio set (RT-524 transceiver
+ R-442 receiver) in my 1986 M998 HMMWV. It's pretty noisy in that
passenger compartment... how "wrong" would it be to also install an
AM-1780 intercom amplifier, with C-2298 control boxes at the four
passenger positions, so that the passengers could wear headsets to cut
out the noise and talk in normal voices? Were intercoms ever installed
in HMMWVs in military service?
If I decide to do this, I figure I'll try to mount the AM-1780 on the
auxiliary radio shelf (in place of the comsec equipment that I don't
have), and attach the control boxes to the cargo bulkhead (which
doesn't really belong in a 4-door, anyway). That way, I wouldn't need
to drill any additional holes in anything that can't be replaced
easily.
Pictures of my truck live on my web page (see below), in case you're
curious.
BTW, I'm planning to install an intercom in my 2.5-ton, whether it's
"right" or not! Hearing protection is an absolute requirement in that
cab, and it's virtually impossible to communicate effectively with ear
muffs on and that turbo screaming.
