Knowledgeable Listers, mechanics, and lovers of OD stuff,
I am rebuilding the engine for an M38A1, and have gotten as far as
reinstalling the pistons on the crankshaft. I am now trying to find 8
stamped sheet metal jam nuts to go on the connecting rods. I have tried
6 different automotive parts shops, 3 speed shops and every hardware
store in the area.
I have bought flat "bolt keepers" that could be turned on with pliers
(cringe!)
I have been told the jam nuts aren't really needed. (but it's my engine
if the nuts come loose!)
I have been told to just use regular lock nuts
I have been greeted with mostly blank stares accompanied by slow shaking
of heads and "no-sorry, try_______ down the road"
My questions:
1) Does anybody have some they would part with?
2) Can a slim jam nut be used satisfactorily instead of the sheet metal
ones? ($4 per 100 at industrial supply house only 18 miles from home)
3) Does it really matter? I figure Willys wouldn't have put them there
if they weren't needed, but would rather have experienced persons tell
me no.
I'm really amazed at the people behind parts counters today...
them: what engine is that?
me: it's not on your computer, you'll have to look in your books, It's
for a 134 cubic inch willys jeep. They year listing should be ok from
1941 to 1970.
them: what's the liter size?
me: (without looking) 2.2
them: We've got listings for bearings and pistons for a 150 cubic inch
me: No, that's the...never mind (this is where I turn around and walk
out)
Anyhow,
Thanks in advance for any help/direction you can give,
Dave in PA
