GMC M211 Rear main oil seal

What is the trick to getting the upper portion of the rear main seal in on
the GMC 302 C.I. engine? This is the rope seal. I'm using the wire fish with
the clip on the end but the clip pulls off before I even get a 1/2" started.
I've used the bearing cap as a die and formed the seal first. I've also
sprayed lubricant in the seal grove to help it slide in. Still no luck.

Does anyone sell neoprene seals for this? I would think they are easier to
install.

Any suggestions?
