I'm a bit disappointed with the results of trying to get vacuum wipers
working on my M37, and I'm looking for some useful advise from those who
have some experience with this area.
First, some background:
My '52 has a civilian engine in it, and it had no vacuum
piping. I replaced a plug in the intake manifold and connected 1/8 copper
pipe. From there I went to the vacuum side of the fuel pump. (I rebuilt
this 2 years ago , and I did not test the vacuum side today beyond putting
my finger over the port and feeling suction on it)
From the vacuum pump I put new lines in to the wipers.
One wiper turns easily by hand, the other is stiffer. I have not done any
work on them, and they are original to the truck.
When I ran the motor, the first wiper seemed to be working ok - until I put
the wiper arm on. It just has not quite got the power to complete the
sweep. The other one just sits there.. The better one works best at a
fairly low idle. Increasing the revs does not help.
The question - which of the following should I do, and in what order?
1) remove all the lines I put in and redo them, assuming I have a leak.
2) remove and disassemble the vacuum pump
3) get 1 (or 2) rebuild kits and rebuild the wipers (how hard is this job
anyway?)
4) throw all of this stuff out and order 2 electric motors, and go have
several beers.
Thanks
