From years of observation of Cub Scout "Pinewood Derby" races, which are very
similar, except they have many more restrictions to make it more even. The
best results are obtained by light, low vehicles. The wheels (given in the
kit and standard to the races) are approximately 1-1/2" in diameter and 1/4
wide. Larger - thinner wheels would help. Have seen the wheels shaved to
make only a small razor edge running surface, seems to help. Biggest problem
is axle/wheel resistance. Restricted from ball bearings in Scout race, but
graphite dust on polished center holes and polished shafts helps a lot.
Good luck, Tom Campbell - Birmingham, Alabama
