Sounds like bad head gasket - not a hard problem to cure. Never had it on
M38 but did on cj2 (about same engine) -- suggestion -- I replace head
gasket two times close together before i was told to replace stud bolts at
same time. They had gotten some rust on them and were 40 years old, when I
would torque them to spec. they would stretch and the next day would be off
spec. Be sure to clean both surfaces and be careful with sand paper sort of
easy to sand depression in metal that can cause gasket to fail.

You can get gasket at most any parts store. - same for studs if you choose
to replace them also.

Not a sure thing but place to start
