I just talked to a guy I know that has a similar sounding generator unit,
the part about the pulley on the end of the main generator is what got me
thinking about this. This unit is called a PU-21 made in 1945 and is
powered by a Hercules ZXB (should be similar to a ZXA other than bore
diameter if I remember correctly). The main generator unit is larger in
diameter than it is long. It's a 400Hz machine with a rotating permanent
magnet field and puts out 4kW 120V 3Phs. The pulley on the end drives a
small DC generator which is rated at 28VDC 0.75kW. Obviously this is an
aircraft ground power unit. Could it be that you have a newer version of
basically the same thing??????
