The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships
2000 Return - Dover/Dunkirk
27th May - 1st June 2000
To date, 82 Little Ships have indicated their intention to take part in the
Commemorative Return from Dover to Dunkirk on Thursday 1st June 2000, to
mark the 60th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo when 350, 000 men were
evacuated from the Dunkirk beaches
.
Escorted by HMS Somerset and The University Royal Navy Units HMS Dasher and
HMS Puncher, the flotilla of Little Ships will set sail from Dover for
Dunkirk at approximately 7am. HMS Somerset is a Type 23 Duke Class frigate
that entered service with the Royal Navy in 1996. Her primary role is as an
anti-submarine frigate. She is fitted with a wide suite of weapons that
greatly enhance her capabilities and, propelled by the unique diesel,
electric and gas turbine combination, she is capable of near silent running.
It will take most of the day for the Little Ships to reach their destination
and whilst in Dunkirk they will be moored in the centre in the Bassin du
Commerce.
In addition a Lifeboat from the RNLI at Poole will bring up the rear of the
flotilla. Without the support of the Royal Navy and the RNLI the return of
the Little Ships every five years to Dunkirk would not be possible.
