OK, Lisa, here goes with some answers.

1- All are serial numbered, as well as branch of service reg. no. (This
number is usually painted on the side of bed with branch of service). Such
as USMC 39578 (not a real number).
2- If you had a list of contractors or contracts you could tell what numbers
they built. I don't of any way you can look at a number and tell who built
it. If there is a trick to it I'd like to know what it is. If the data plate
is present it (of course) will tell who built it, and who it was issued to.
3- The 2cycl. engine (2AO42) was common to other equip. (gen. sets and a
bunch of other things) I remember a self-propelled asphalt roller with a
2AO42 engine. The 2cycl. also is easier to work on.
4- The A5 had only 2 wheel steering, the others could be changed with a
change of a pin position in the linkage. The A5 also had aluminum wheels and
bed, the others were mad of magnesium.

As far as I know the models were as follows:

M274 Carrier,Light Weapons, Infantry built by Willys 4cycl.
M274 A1 not sure what the nomenclature was on this one , built Willys
4cycl.
M274A2 Truck,Platform, Utility built by Bowen-McLaughin-York
2cycl. ( I think
the name change came with the 2 cycl. engine)
M274A3 Truck, Platform ,Utility built by Willys( the result of the
2AO42 being put on
                                                             the M274)
M274A4 Truck,Platform,Utility Built by Willys( the result of the
2AO42 being put on
                                                             the M274A1),
but I have one that says Kaiser on the
                                                                 data plate.
M274A5 Truck,Platform,Utility Built by Baifield Industries ( a
division of a company
                                                             who made
sprinkler systems, can't remember their
                                                              name. 2 cycl.
1965--1969
                                                              Also, by
Brunswick Corp. 1969--1970 ( At this time
                                                               Brunswick
belonged to AMF, so did

Harley-Davidson and Mercury Marine.

Models A2--A5 were upgraded by the Army ( electric start and charging
system, wide wheels and fenders) as a platform for the TOW weapons system.
Hope all this helps!!
