Bill,
The simplest way to have 2wd low range is just as you describe, using 4wd low, but
with the front hubs unlocked. If lockout hubs are not available for a particular
vehicle, it is possible to get another set of stock drive hubs and machine out the
splines, creating a permanent free wheeling hub. A friend of mine did this on an
M35A2 and painted the free wheeling set a different color than the "lockers".
It's about a 10 minute job to change both hubs.
Another parade trick if you don't have lock out hubs is to use 4wd low on straight
sections and shift back into 2wd for turns.
Be very careful with your M38A1 using low range with only the front drive shaft.
You must remember that low range puts about twice the torque through the drive
line as high range and that the front drive shaft is a puny "auxiliary" drive
shaft compared to the rear on many vehicles. The rear drive shaft that would
normally help with this load is not there. You can probably get away with this in
a parade. Loading the jeep on a trailer in front wheel drive low range could be
asking for trouble.
Have a great Memorial Day!
