Ian,
All of these torque converters/fluid flywheels are as good as gold normally,
overheating is almost invariably owing to low oil levels. The two faults we
have seen that cause oil loss are a failure of the outer case gasket, but
that's only been seen once to my knowledge and the failure of the gearbox
shaft seal in the centre of the converter.
This latter seal is in a position where general crud can fall down onto the
shaft and ultimately damage the seal lip, its still rare though and a bit
more potentially worrying if you have a Ferret that served in a sandy,
desert climate. Should this seal begin to weep its worth doing a number on
it immediately and before the shaft has an associated groove worn in it.
One reason for religiously checking the converter level, investigate any
loss immediately.
