Cutting off the fuel is one way to shut down a run away diesel engine, BUT
diesel
engines run away most of the time because of ENGINE OIL. CUTTING OFF THE
DIESEL FUEL WILL NOT SHUT IT DOWN!
example 1 on a 2 stroke Detroit- 671-if the piston pin "freeze plug" should
pop out
of the piston the engine will receive a full engine oil pressure supply of
fuel to run
away until the oil supply is used up, but i guarantee there will be pieces of
the engine
all over the ground first. to shut down this runaway engine would to pull the
emergency air door mounted outside of the blower. when this is done it will
most
likely suck the blower seals inside out. the engine will shut down and the
blower will
probably have to be rebuilt. if you don't check this out it will run away
again because you now have a new fuel source- through the blower seals.
Example 2- THE TURBO wears out and the oil seal is damaged. You will have
full engine oil pressure spraying into the inlet side of the air intake, and
with an unlimited amount or oil acting as a new fuel the engine will run
higher and higher until BANG!
new motor time and a lot of rags.
IF AN ENGINE SHOULD RUN AWAY AND YOU DO NOT HAVE AN AIR INTAKE
SHUT OFF VALVE AND YOU ARE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH A STANDARD
TRANSMISSION, SHIFT THE ENGINE IN HIGH GEAR (4TH OR 5TH) AND STAND ON THE
BRAKE PEDAL. THIS WILL KILL THE ENGINE ALSO, PROVIDED YOU
REPAIRED OR REBUILT THE BRAKES THAT WERE NOT WORKING FROM DRMO. LAST IF YOUR
RUNNING THE ENGINE IN THE SHOP WITH THE AIR FILTER HOSE OFF, JUST HAVE A
SMALL PIECE OF PLYWOOD NEAR BY AND
SET IT ON THE INTAKE HOLE, IT WILL SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN EVERY TIME
I HOPE THIS HELPS, GARY'S HALF TRACK PARTS
