Compression aside, one of the major differences between a diesel engine and a
gasoline engine is in how the pistons are lubricated as they operate in the
cylinders. Traditional diesel engines need no extra lubrication, as the fuel
takes care of this.
When you run gasoline in a diesel/multi fuel engine, you can make the
compression work, but you have lost the lubrication capabilities of the
diesel fuel.
Hence, the Field Expedient TM's in the mid 80's always suggested adding a
quart of oil to every 5 gallons of gasoline used in a multi-fuel in emergency
situations.
POL "smart folks" have since told me that you can make emergency diesel fuel
the same way. One quart of oil to 5 gallons of gas.
