Even today railroads are used to transport MV's especially heavy armor.
Railways were vital in WWII moving ordanace and supplies off the ports. I
had a very could visit with a WWII Vet who was with a railway battlalion
off of Normandy. They bring engines built for the Europeon track gage with
them when they landed and repaired the railroads as they went. They also
had to contend with snipers and mines and ambushes. This gentlemen was an
engineer and had worked for Union Pacific before he was called for service.
He returned to UP and was an Engineer the rest of his career. They were
armed, but Garands were really unhandy in a locomotive cab. Also some of
the larger camps had their own small railroads. A locomotive an MV?
Somethign you don't think of often. Thanks Howard at DVS
