Mule Update

I never get as much done as I plan in a weekend, which
leaves me tired and disappointed.
I did get the engine out. The clutch disc and pressure plate
were covered in thick rust. This was odd since there was no
evidence of water in the transaxle. Removed them, then did
the grease-and-pilot-alignment-tool-hammer trick to get the
pilot bushing out. The previous person obviously did not
know about this trick as the pilot bushing was scarred by
inept attempts at removal by other means. The flywheel bolt
spun right off with the air impact. Now, to remove the
flywheel. This is where the game "Make That Tool" comes
from. Contestants realize that in order to disassemble some
component a special tool is required. The object of the game
is to make the tool using supplies on hand or easily
available at the closest hardware store. The winner receives
the satisfaction of making a tool that sucessfully separates
the components. This seemed to be a no-brainer. Let's see,
1/4" x 2" flat stock with three holes drilled in it, two for
the flywheel and one threaded one in the center for a bolt;
as the bolt is tightened against the end of the crankshaft,
the flywheel pulls off the crank. Starting with a small
drill bit and gradually working my way larger [due to dull
bits, which the cheesy Harbor Freight drill bit sharpener on
sale for $19.00 couldn't sharpen] I hit major problems at
the 7/16" size, when the drill press refused to hold the bit
tight. Gave up, switched to my new electric hand drill.
Realized why the drill press had problems--the drill almost
torqued out of my hand on a couple of occasions. After
getting the big center hole drilled to 9/16", I found that I
did not have a bolt or tap that size. By now the hardware
store was closed--you guessed it--5 min earlier. The buzzer
sounded--we are out of time folks, but return again next
week, when the steel is tapped and the bolt is purchased.
