The carriers in the DIRTY HARRY movie were two CVE's from WW II; this was
filmed about the time the CVE's were pretty much gone except for four which
were reclassified as aircraft ferries and used to ferry "Flying Military
Vehicles" to/from RVN. They were CARD (CVE-11/T-AKV-41 scrapped in 1971;
CORE (CVE-13/T-AKV-41) scrapped in 1971; BRETON (CVE-23/T-AKV-42) scrapped
in 1972 and CROATAN (CVE-25/T-AKV-43) also scrapped in 1971. Since these
were the last ones used, I had always suspected that the two carriers in the
movie were two of the four listed above due to what was probably left around
for scrapping by the time the movie was made except that the movie they were
in, MAGNUM FORCE, the second of the five DIRTY HARRY movies, was not filmed
until 1973. Consequently, the two carriers tied up were probably two from
the rusting mothball fleet at Suisan Bay, San Francisco. I have queried
the CVE association to see if they know which two "floating military
vehicles" were used.

Hi List,
Stray thought during discussion of carriers being scrapped and such. Does
anybody remember the Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" movie in which they had
part of a motorcycle chase on, and inside, a carrier (or two) being
scrapped? I always wondered where that was shot and what the carriers were.
Anybody have a clue?
