Hi List,
Some time back we posted a message for help on replacing a steering gear box
on a M35A2. Had a lot of good feedback from everybody and really do
appreciate it. So over the next few nights, will tell the whole story on
how everything went on the gear box. Tonight will be a refresher on what
the problem was. The problem was turning the steering wheel left or right,
with each revolution of the steering wheel, had a loud bang just about loud
enough to rattle the chains on the tailgate. Did some investigating on the
steering components, had my wife turn the steering wheel, placed my finger
against the frame and on the pittman arm. When the wheel was turned, the
pittman arm shaft would come out about 3/16". When the bang occurred, the
arm would jump back into the gear box. Put a posting up on the list for
ideas, and quite a few people came back saying to replace the gear box. Now
that it's behind me, I want to tell the story seeing that a few days ago
there was a thread about a banging gear box. Try placing your hand on the
frame and let your palm rest on the pittman arm - have a friend turn the
steering wheel and see if your shaft jumps in and out. Don't want to get
too lengthy here - so I'll post Part 2 tomorrow on how the removal went.
Hopefully it might help someone.
Harold
