I think you have to go to the definition of toxic as mentioned. Almost
anything except H2O and food is somewhat detrimental to the human body over a
period of time. (I've heard that beer and whiskey actually improves it, when
used in moderation of course!)

Some of the old coils might have PCB based oil in them, I really don't know.
That can cause cancer eventually if ingested in some people. I'm sure that
some of the additives in motor oil aren't too good for you also. Personally
I'd be more concerned about long term exposure to used motor oil. There is
all kinds of combustion by products that get into used motor oil. Most of
them are not too good for you. But in order for it to get inside you body,
you have to be soaking in it, breathing the mist or eating it. I try to
avoid all of these things. However parts cleaning tanks don't help much.
Ever have your hands tingle after cleaning parts in Kerosene. Some of the
stuff migrates through your skin.

My grandfather was a transformer repair specialist. He repaired power
transformers until he was 65, worked 6 days a week, 10 hours per day and he
retired before they banned PCB based transformer oil. He routinely had to
climb into half full transformers (yes - taking a bath in the PCB based oil -
these are the really big transformers) and repair them. He died of old age
at 90 years in 1982. My grandmother, his wife, died at 89 of throat cancer.
She was otherwise in excellent health. Her mother lived to be 105. She
never smoked. I can't figure that one out.
