Just got back late last night - absolutely shattered... need a new pair of
feet - was there for the whole 5 days...
Saw some of you - but not as many as I'd hoped to - got over to the "Andreas
camp"... found the recognition panels... but alas everyone was out.... for a
spin in the Kettenrad?
Bought too many things to fit in the jeep to go home - fortunately found a
friendly AEC Militant driver happy to haul it all back in his empty
cavernous truck.
I was camped with the British Airborne Rear Area (LAD, RASC) living history
display, by the exit gate of the arena - perhaps some of you saw it.... a
lot of hard work paid off and we won the prize for Best Display... we were
kindly loaned one of the 75mm pack howitzers for sale on site, which I was
sorely tempted to add to my collection. However lacking a Section One Fire
Arms Certificate, I will have to wait till another time. Does anyone have
any info on these guns and what the UK requirements would be to have a live
one ?
In all an excellent show - an improvement on showers and toilets from last
year... I got a lovely hot shower every morning (except yesterday), and
never queued more than 15 mins (The need for any queuing could have been
removed with larger changing facilities such that people didnt need to
change in the shower cubicle... a seperate entrance to the shower block from
the other end of the building throug a changing tent would be my answer....
perhaps I'm being too fusy.)... I understand the problems that resulted with
the closure of the toliet ameneties were due to the waste-pit pumps failing
and the lack of persons willing to dive to the bottom of the pit with a
repair kit...
The only other annoying factor was the lovely big water tanker... I'm sure
there is a way to get water out without getting soaked, but i never did
manage to persuade the 4in diameter jet to go into my 1in diameter bottle
without wasting any water... perhaps there'll be a tap on the pipe next
year.
I was somewhat amazed by the stupidity of some people at the event -
considering it was a vehicle rally, and that the majority of vehicles have
tires... you would think participants would put their waste bottles in bins
and not leave them in the road... fortunately I think my jeep escaped
damage, whereas the pile of milk bottles I'd just crunched over in the dark
didnt survive to see the sunrise.
However all that aside - it was a great show - most enjoyable... already
looking forward to next year.
Anyone know where I can hire a car transporter in the UK ? It must be the
cheapest way to get 5 Jeeps and 4 Trailers the 270 mile round trip next
year.
Regards
Tim
