On the Friday, Ginger Gammon (he of the Ginger Gammon Beer Tent) - just
think how much beer you have to consume to have a beer tent named after you!
organised a 25 mile road run for motorbikes and asked me to go along. When
I pointed out that my 1997 State Blue Ultraglide could hardly be construed
as 'military' he said 'Oh f***k all that politically correct bollocks, come
along for the fun'. In the event, there were twenty five bikes marshalled
by two modern Harleys to block off traffic at roundabouts and dangerous
junctions, three other modern civvies, four or five WLAs of which one was
showing 200 miles from a major rebuild that had truly restored the bike to
'new' condition, about four BSA M20s, three Armstrongs and an assortment of
modern European military bikes that I didn't recognise. Ginger had done two
recces of the entire route and organised a lunch stop. The weather was hot
and sunny and it was a pleasure to watch the half mile long column of
assorted bikes, many with pillion passengers, streaming through the leafy
Kent lanes. Just one example of the excellent spirit that seemed to
characterise this year's Beltring. Sorry I missed talking to so many - it
was me driving round on the Popemobile. See you all next year!
