Going into reverse engages the sprag unit. When you go forward again, you
have two choices. Start in 1st, and you disengage. Start in 2nd and you
keep all wheel drive.

That's what we were taught in basic in 1970 at Leonard Wood, and it always
seemed to work as best as I can remember.
