No "if" about it, wearing decorations you are not entitled to IS illegal.

Which is why most clubs there rule that no decorations or insigna of rank
may be worn _unless_ the wearer is entitled to them.
In other words, you can only wear the Légion d'Honneur and captain's
stripes if you are a Captain in the French Army, and have earned the Légion
d'Honneur. (not many of those at our meetings ;-)
OTOH, participants were invited to try to look unconspicuous on their MVs,
and wear a battle-dress, OD fatigues or an OD boiler-suit rather than jeans
and a red checkered shirt !
