List, especially those with M35 Series trucks,
Some time ago I posted to the List asking for tech help in removing
a real difficult bolt that is one of four holding the master cylinder to
its mounting bracket. I could reach through the hinged cover on
the cab floor and reach in, with difficulty, and touch the head of
the hidden bolt on the upper left. Thanks to Jeff at Tactical Truck,
who gave me a nudge by saying: "Aw, come on Joe, we did this
job in the DRMO parking lot!" :-) He advised me to use a swivel
socket on a long extension. One person under the truck with a
ratchet and a helper to place and hold the socket on the bolt head.
I had to put the extension through a half-moon shaped opening in
the cross member, next to the frame, and feed it through to Tony
who held the socket in place while I loosened the bolt. I also
had to remove just about all of the fittings on the cylinder in order
to turn it just right and slide it out. I actually considered pulling
the air seat, cutting an access hole with a cutoff tool and then
welding and smoothing the opening when finished.
Well, I have another one to do, and I'm grateful Tony (a customer
of mine that travels several hours to come down and help me on the
trucks -- gratis!) plans to be here later this morning.
Due to a puter problem, I was unable to send this post this morning.
In the meantime, Tony shows up and we tackle the master cylinder.
This one was different. We were able to use a long 3/8" extension
and a plain socket, no swivels. Went straight in through a hole in
the crossmember. I held the socket on the bolt and Tony worked
the ratchet. Job done.
Tony's a heck of a man. Got done work 6:30 this morning and
drove right down to my place, almost three hours, then worked
till 2:00 this afternoon before heading back and working tonight!
Hopefully, none of you will encounter this job, but if you do, the
above info should help.
