Its a WWII Army officer's bedroll. This is where officers kept their
blankets, sleeping bags, shelterhalves (officers got 2 halves to make a
single tent for themselves), pins, poles, ropes etc. I understand that armor
and vehicle crews put a great deal of effort into obtaining these as well.
