I'm glad this topic came up. I recently experienced blown head gaskets
in my HMMWV's 6.2 diesel, and it turns out that both heads were
cracked, too. I don't know if it made a difference in the short time
I've had the truck, but I had just used the cheapest glycol antifreeze
from Pep Boys. Based on this discussion, I went out to a truck stop
yesterday and picked up some Shell antifreeze that specifically says
it's good for heavy duty diesel engines, and I plan to change out the
coolant in my HMMWV and deuce real soon now. I might as well flush out
the deuce while I'm at it; I flushed out the HMMWV a few weeks ago.

I tried Pep Boys first, just because they're the closest "auto parts
shop" (I use that term loosely :-) to my house. The only diesel-rated
coolant they had was some different Shell stuff which was pre-diluted,
but cost the same amount per gallon as the undiluted stuff. What a
scam! :-) They used to carry Shell Rotella SAE 30, but for the last 6
months or so they've only carried their 15W40. Looks like I need to
trek out to the truck stop to get oil for my green trucks, now. :-(
