Joe, I would bet on it! The damage looks like a bunch of tiny shaped charges went off. Thats' close to what actually happens in fact. Problem is,if your tin core plugs are pitted so is the interior of the water passages. Ain't this fun?

<< Jack,
I just replaced a leaking freeze plug on a CUCV 6.2 diesel. It
had a hole about 3/16" in it and I couldn't figure out why. There
are several deeply pitted areas on the plug that resemble
countersinks. No rust or evidence of corrosion, so I'm now
thinking it was caused by cavitation. Out with the perm in it
and in with a diesel rated coolant.
Thanks ever so much fo the tech info.
