Hello Dave,
> How is the controller activated, from the key?
Yes, Turning the key to the "ON" position will activate the glow plug
circuit and the "WAIT" light comes on for about 15 seconds or so when engine
is cold. When it goes out, you turn the key to "START" like you would a gas
engine. When engine is warm or hot, WAIT light will not come on and engine
is started like a regular gas engine. They start very quickly/well when
warm!
> Where is the controller module, so I can see if it is even there.?
It is a little black plastic box about the size of a pack of cigarettes
that is supposed to be fastened above the steering column suppost by one
plastic pushpin. (under the dash) Normally you find them hanging with no
top cover under there and is easily seen. There is a little PCB/card that
slides into it and can be pulled out. It has a little harness that goes
through the firewall to connect to the water sensor and glow plug relay
coil. (five wires) Sensor wires are black/yellow. It is connected to the
wiring harness under the dash by way of one molex connector. There are some
new surplus ones for sale from Front Line Surplus that are new in the GM bag
with complete harness on it. All you need is it, water sensor and the
glowplugs. Glow plugs can be checked for continuity to ground with a
ohmmeter or continuity checker. (very simple) Check these before you pull
them for replacement.
