I'm in the throws of rebuilding the suspension on my '55 M38A1 and need to
replace the worn out spring shackles. They seem like a very weak design
with no support plate on the opposing side of the shackle (the grease
fitting side). I plan on using this vehicle off road and don't want one of
these shackles to fold up on me in the middle of the nowhere. Does anyone
know if these are prone to failure? There is an updated design of an outter
metal sleeve, rubber bushing, and inner metal sleeve that is not greaseable
(it would be similar to the piviting end of the spring), and has support
plates on both sides of the springs (seems to be a superior design). Any
thoughts on this?
Lastly, I see the brake lines that come off the master cylinder are copper
(certainly copper colored). They appear to be stock. I was always told
that copper brake lines are a big no-no. Are these Mil-Spec lines of a
stronger alloy? Has anyone else encountered copper brake lines on their
MVs? All the brake lines are rust free and were easily dissasembled. Any
opinions on replacing the copper lines?
Thanks,
Allen in Seattle
