The Mid-South Chapter of the MVPA has again been asked to display vehicles at
the Wings of Honor Air Show in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas (About 100 miles NW of
Memphis, TN). The airshow is September 30 at the former W.W.II training base
at Walnut Ridge. Return fuel for historic military vehicles will be provided
at the site IF you let me know what vehicle you are bringing by September 18.
All vehicles need to be in place by 8 AM Saturday. The Airshow closes at 5
PM. Several historic aircraft are expected including a Corsair, a Sea Fury,
and many others.
A large group of us will be convoying from Rosemark, TN to Walnut Ridge,
AR on Friday the 29th. Tentative plans are to leave at 11:00 AM Friday.
Please give me a call (or email) if you would like to go with us. Motel
rooms are available at a brand new Days Inn in Pocahontas, AR (about 6 miles
north of the airshow site). The phone number there is 870-892-9500 (This
really is the number, the motel has not opened yet, so you may get an
answering machine). If you call by 9/16/00 and mention that you are with the
MVPA you will get a special rate of $65.00 per night. Call later and you may
not be able to get a room at all!!
The airshow organizers (who are raising money for the Walnut Ridge
Flying School Museum) ask that you not bring pets, live weapons, alcohol or
pornography.
Those of us who went last year were surprised by how grateful the
attendees were that we came and how respectful of our equipment they were.
We again hope to rendezvous with the Arkansas MVPA chapter on site.
     THEN......
Rather than going home, a large group of us will be leaving the motel at
sunrise (actually driving away, not getting up!!) Sunday morning (October 1)
and convoying to the Wheelin' 2000 car show in Brownsville, TN to help raise
money for the Haywood County Multi-handicapped center. This car show, which
we have attended for many years now, aids children with severe handicaps.
Entry fee for the car show is 15.00. (and you get a tee shirt and usually
several dollars worth of door prizes!!!) Registration is 9 AM until 1:30 PM,
with judging beginning at 1:30.
While this is a busy weekend, and it may be somewhat inconvenient,
please remember.....
    1) That if it were not for the veterans who trained at Walnut Ridge and
other such bases we would not have the freedom to drive 100 miles when we
want to. It is important that museums such as the one at Walnut Ridge exist
so future generations can learn from the sacrifices made by others.
     2) The hardship, expense and inconvenience of rising early and making
the trip to the car show is minuscule compared to the hardships those
handicapped children and their parents face every day. I think that many of
us take healthy children for granted, but can we really say to the parents of
one of these handicapped children, "It is too much trouble for me to try to
help your child for one day?"
We hope to see each of you at at least one of these events!! Please
contact me if you have any questions.
