There is a "ton" of generation 1 and 2 NVG stuff on the market. There are no
export constraints on this level of equipment. Lots of old Soviet Union
equipment out there and not that expensive. Most of the generation 1 and 2
NV stuff burns up batteries pretty quickly.
Generation 3 is much better, and generation 3+ is awesome. Gen 3+ doesn't
burn out batteries that fast and really amplifies the available light. Most
have protection against a flashlight being shined in your face. It is also
very expensive.
Gen 3+ has incredible constraints on export. Used to be we were the only
ones that made the 3+, but it is licensed to Israel now also.
There is little 3+ available on the market to civilians, but every once in a
while you'll find some "souvenirs" available. I ran across some PVS-7b's not
too long ago and he wanted $5000. Not a bad price but too much for me.
