So, on a 5 ton winch with good cable and a weight on the back you should be
able to lift 4.5ton?

It was a "poor-man's" wrecker. It allowed you to pull the engines of light
wheeled vehicles like the M37/M715/M151, etc. The capacity was the same as
the winch. You are limited by cable size, not the A-Frame.
