John, it's hard to say about the value of something I haven't seen. AND I
could be mistaken about the tailgate thing. The M38 did have a tailgate, but
it was bolted together so it wouldn't open, and now that I think about it, I
may have the two crossed up. It's the M38A1 that doesn't have a tailgate,
while the M38 does, but like I said above it's bolted shut.
A couple of things to look for as pointers
(1) A M38A1 will have a rounded hood and front fenders like a CJ5.
(2) A M38A1 will have a round dished in section on the right front fender for
the slave receptacle.
(3) If the motor is still in it, the M38A1 would have a "F" head motor that
looks like an overhead cam engine. It will have a valve cover on top, with
the carburator off to the side. If it's a military motor it will start with
Serial Number MD ******
(4) A M38 will have a flat hood and front fenders
(5) If the motor is still in it, the M38 will have a flat head "L" head
motor, with no valve cover, and the carburator off to the side. The serial
number will start with MC*****.
Hope this helps some.
