Difficulty in gear shifting

The gear shifting in my MUTT is not smooth- between all gears. I got a new
clutch plate fitted a month ago. The clutch pedal free play is about 4
inches. Is the clutch plate defective or was it fitted incorrectly? Could
the excess clutch pedal free play be the villain? What is the solution?
