The compressor always turns round and round but it isn't necessarily always
functioning. There is an unloader valve on the firewall just to the right
of the air filter (when standing on the bumper looking back at the
firewall). You will see several tubes going to it. One is a pressure line
from the tank. If I remember right there is a Tee and that line continues
on to the air horn, but don't quote me on that. The valve senses pressure
on this line then activates the unloader in the head of the compressor.
That is the other line that goes from the valve to the compressor. Notice
that they monitor the pressure not from the compressor output but from a
different line from the tank. The unloader simply forces the input valve in
the head of the compressor open so it never builds any pressure while in
that state, or at least that's how they ussually work. You should hear a
rather loud click as your driving, suprisingly just after or durring braking
in many cases, that is the unloader valve doing it's thing and telling the
compressor to start pumping again and/or stop pumping. Everytime I drive
the truck around I hear that noise and think "what hell was that" then I
remember it's just the unloader.
