After a little legwork, I have the following to
report:
The base historian for the US Navy is located at Port
Hueneme (California). Vincent Transano (805/982-5913)
and Carol Marsh (805/982-5563) are the two points of
contact for civilian inquiries. Give them the US Navy
"N" number (I'm assuming that this is the registration
number on the hood) and they can research WW2 era US
Navy/USMC vehicles to determine the date of purchase
and surplus, as well as service information.
They cannot research data for Korean War and later
vehicles as those records are not available (I'm not
sure why). You might want to contact them for further
information as to the exact cutoff date.
I'm having them research my US Navy WC-22 at the
moment. I'll post the results here when I get them.
