Air leakage in CUCV fuel system

List members,

My M1009 CUCV will not start after sitting more than an hour and a half. If I
open the top vent on the fuel filter assembly after it sits for a while there
is air in there. To get it started I need to bleed the air out as much as
possible, then pour a few drops of fuel or Stanadyne fuel additive in the
intake and crank it. It will then burp a few times, rev up and then settle
back down to a normal idle. It runs great from then on until it's turned off
for a while again. This situation is the same no matter what the outside
temp.

I see in the manuals that there are seals and packings in the fuel filter
base that could be sucking air. I've checked the rubber fuel lines as well as
the steel lines and the filter assembly for signs of leakage or damage.
Everything seems to be tight and dry. The fuel pump is only a few months old
and I don't find any signs of fuel in the crankcase.

Is this a common problem? This is my first diesel. Before I start to replace
everything, has anyone had this problem before?

Any help would be appreciated.
