Well, as a foreigner myself...... 8-)
The majority of transatlantic air traffic will come into Heathrow, from
there it would be (guess) 70 miles or so to Beltring round some very
crowded and zippy roads if you're not used to changing gear with your left
hand (automatic, what's that ?) To get the full effect you should really
stay on site, which matches nicely with the fact that all the surrounding
accomodation will be booked up well before.
In your situation I'd look to see if you could hire a camper van for
whatever period you were going to be there, and try to tie up with some
other travellers too so that access to extra facilities could be sorted
out well in advance. Given the chance I'd be there early, even if it
meant having to leave before the finish as joe public turns up in droves.
Think about the per pound / kilo cost of getting any purchases home too.
You aren't planning on buying anything ? - you haven't seen it yet.
