Subject: [MV] 5 ton and 2.5 ton truck questions??

1) Power steering
Does anybody know if the power steering on 5 ton can be converted over to
the 2.5 ton.?
I know about the air assist units available for about $1100 but my mechanic
thinks hydralic is better so I thought I would ask the experts.

Start looking around for a power steering box <it bolts right in no
modification required as it was designed for the M-35A3 rebulild program
which was cut short of completion> You should be able to find one, remember
it's a kit and should include the power steering pump.

2) Air assist power steering units
Does anybody have experience with the air assist units? Do they work well
and hold up good?

Yes they hold up well and take less effort than a manual sterr truck.

3) Locking hubs
The same people that make the air assist ps make locking hubs for the duece.
Anybody know how significant the benefits are with those?

Go here <see below. Don't forget to thank Joe Young!!>

3) Chains
Does anybody have experience with chains on these trucks?

Yes!
Do they really help in mud?

You bet they do when you have NDT tires!!

Are they easy to put on and take off? Time?

A pain in the butt but if you plan on offroad excursions bets you learn how
to put them on on dry land before you get into the dirt. No fun putting them
on when the truck is already stuck in 2 feet or more of MUD!!! <Food for
thought!!>

4) Engines 5 ton
Which is best?
Multifuel Continental
Mack
Detroit

In my book the Mutifuel is the best. Think about it. You can buy parts NOS
or takeouts for short money compared to a Mack or Cummins. The Military does
use the Detroit 2 stroke engine but I've only seen em in armored MV's. Not
in trucks.

5) What is the number for the 5 ton cargo truck ...M-???

Thanks for your wisdom and experience!!
