Ground hopping refers to running a power pack prior to installing it.  In other words, while it is still sitting on the ground.  It is a great way to identify leaks, etc prior to fully installing.   It is very common with tracked/armor vehicles.  Any time we pulled a pack from one of our howitzers, we would ground hop it prior to reinstalling.

I personally ground hop or run any engine prior to installing it in a vehicle.  So much simpler to fix problems while still outside the vehicle, especially if repair requires removal.
